Learning to discuss important issues.

Some issues we talked about were:

  • Testing on animals.
  • Advertising.
  • School uniforms.
  • Advertising.
  • Zoos: animals in or out?
  • Women in boxing.
  • Corporal punishment.

Discussions give children a voice within the classroom and teach them how to formulate and be able to express themselves concisely and cohesively.

The discussion topics provide and opportunity to develop thinking skills such as objectivity, an understanding of perspective, a consolidation of personal values and creative thinking. Debating teams are restricted to three or four students. The rest of the class is used as the “jury.” This jury will be responsible for voting on which side presents the best argument (regardless of their personal views or position).
